In the municipality of Tejeda, we find Roque Nublo Natural Monument icon of Gran Canaria. This natural sculpture is part of the Rural Park El Nublo. The erosion has given to this rock the amazing form that we can see and enjoy in our days. This phenomenon had sculpted the landscape of Gran Canaria giving the island a unique personality. The Roque Nublo has its origin in one of the five volcanic episodes that has occurred when the island was formated, around 14,5 million years ago, specifically the second one.
Roque Nublo is considered as one of the largest rocks in the world, due to its great altitude. It rises 80 m high and is located at 1813 m above sea level. It is really a mix of the rest of the material originated by the big explosive eruption of a volcano, that according to the information that the specialists found, could rise up to 3,000 meters. The force of erosion over millions of years gives this big stone the form of monolith that we see today. Roque Nublo offers you a nice 360º view, like no other point in Gran Canaria, a good example is that on clear days, from here is very easy to enjoy the image of the Teide in Tenerife.
For the culture of Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands, this is a very important place. Roque Nublo was a point of worship for the Canarian ancient aborigines. The first inhabitants of Gran Canaria were from the north of Africa, and their economy was based on agriculture, the success of it was due to their knowledge about the seasons and astronomy. That´s why they had chosen these high points to build these places of rituals called “Almoraganes” and Roque Nublo was one of them.
To enjoy this amazing monument there are two walking trails, the first one and the easy one is “El Camino al Nublo”. This trail of approx. 2km really easy to walk through it, and gives everyone the option to reach the Roque Nublo. The other one is “La Vuelta del Nublo” which is a little bit longer but offers you another panoramic view of this Rural Park.
